The Beginning

From Sept. ‘23-May ‘24 we covered a lot of ground and had the best time learning the RV travel lifestyle! We had some hiccups and obstacles, but we accomplished our goals of milder temps, visiting family members in the South, and seeing what life is like in states we had never visited. The culmination of this trip was seeing the full solar eclipse in April right from our campsite!

Sunsets, Stars and Scenic Drives

Travel days can be hectic and exhausting, but one of the best parts of this life is the scenic drives! Mountains, oceansides, plains and flatlands, wooded areas, cities, and small towns. Once we get to our location Clay finds where the best sunset views will be, and scopes out dark sky areas for star gazing with his telescope. We have enjoyed countless gorgeous sunsets!

Local Fare

One of our favorite parts of travel is visiting towns big and small (but especially small) and enjoying unique as well as classic home town restaurants. Andrea especially enjoys the towns with novelty shops.

Outdoor Activities

You don’t have to be an avid outdoors person to live the RV travel life, though many are. Clay enjoys hiking, we both enjoy biking, and we take walks every day that weather permits. Clay will walk long distances by himself, just exploring. Andrea has arthritis and detests bugs and humidity, so she adapts her walks, “baby” hikes, and biking so they are enjoyable for her, and skips them when it’s not. She uses her Zen Den (gazebo tent) to avoid bugs and still be able to be outside for a variety of more sedentary activities. She prefers being in the RV for yoga and strengthening exercises. One of these days we are going to try kayaking! But it’s not just about being outside. It’s all about experiencing places we’ve never been, however we choose to do it.

Are We Meeing Our Goals?

Since purchasing our RV in March of 2023, we have traveled to 17 states with our RV. In order to “claim” a state we have to spend the night in the RV in that state. We have mostly avoided extreme temperatures, but have still seen some hotter weather than we’d like. At the beginning of our journeys Clay was anticipating traveling about 8-9 months each year, but Andrea was ready to jump in with both feet and be on the road 10+ months a year, only coming home twice a year for health visits. After two and a half years of what we call “most-time RVing”, reality has shown us that we both require more than a couple weeks a year to keep up with our health, our income properties, and be present for our adult kids when they need us. We also just need a “full-hook-up” break, with a laundry room and a solid foundation that doesn’t require watching “Ryan Hall Y’All” every time the wind blows. It’s all about what works. So we took the fall of 2025 to catch up on all the things and rethink how we are going to do this. Can’t wait to get back to it soon!
